153 Troop Recruit Diary – Week 12
After withdrawing weapons from the armoury, we set off on the coach to Straight Point ranges where we would be going everyday this week, just like week 11. On arrival at the ranges we moved to the “ETR” range to do our ACMT. We spent the rest of the day doing ACMT. We enjoyed the first day and most passed all of the ACMT apart from the 300m shoot. The next morning was spent finishing the ACMT re-tests for the individuals that had failed the day before. By the end of the morning the whole Troop had passed all ranges on the ACMT. The training team were very helpful; they kept reminding us of the importance of safety on the ranges and the marksmanship principles.
In the afternoon we headed over to the 25m range to do an automatic shoot with the LSW. Once the entire Troop had been through the shoot we headed over to the area next to the north tower to carry out bayonet training. This involved the Troop exploding with controlled aggression and made us all realise how serious and brutal the job we are training to do can get at the worst of times. On day three the Troop was split in half. One group had to go and do the simulation shoot, while the other group, went off to do CQM shooting. The CQM shoot was the best shoot of the range package and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
The morning of day four was spent doing the respirator shooting test. We found shooting with the respirators very difficult and uncomfortable but all passed first time. After that we did an automatic shoot with our personal SA80 A2’s. We had to fire 3 round bursts. All enjoyed this shoot; it was good to finally fire our weapons on automatic. The rest of the day was spent helping the range staff clear up after us and get the ranges ready for the next Troop on Monday. On Friday we spent the day on camp, cleaning our weapons making them absolutely immaculate ready for the unit armourer’s inspection on Monday. The rest of the day we carried out personal admin. In conclusion week 12 was one of the best weeks in training so far and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
