140 Troop Diary – Week 19

140 Troop Diary – Week 19

The week started with that sick feeling while weighing our webbing  – 21 lbs and rifle, waiting for the first of many infamous weeks, week 19 bottom field sessions. None of the sessions this week would be single periods or easy as bottom field pass out that loomed, just 2 weeks away.

The week began with everyone dreading the daily phys sessions on the assault course but after each session this was replaced with a sense of achievement and pride, as well as “Blood, sweat and seeing our breakfast again”. Then the next day would be the same but instead of blowing out our arms on rope climbs, walls and regains, our legs were left aching from fireman’s carries and the sprints between obstacles. By the end of the week we felt the fittest and most physically tired we had in a long time.

Away from the bottom field, week 19 also consisted of getting our hands on the General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) for the first time. We learnt the weapon system, cleaning, stoppage drills and all the characteristics. Being the second weapon we had learnt everyone picked it up quickly making the weapon handling test seem easy compared to the SA.80.

We ended the long arduous week of daily bottom field sessions and weapon lessons with a rewarding live fire shoot of the GPMG which everyone fully enjoyed!! It was hoofing!!
